Lae City

About Lae

Lae, the capital of Morobe Province with the population of 400,000 people, is home to a diverse range of indigenous people and a lush green environment due to a 5-meter per annum rainfall. The Huon Gulf curves majestically around its shores, making Lae a picture-square seaside setting against the tough and rugged 2,5000-meter terrain that hugs the coast. Connected to the Okuk Highway, the longest road  link into the Highlands and Madang Province, Lae is a vitally important part of the country's business industry and agriculture sector. It is home to the largest seaport in the country and a central central domestic flight capital of PNG. Lae is also the capital of nine districts of the province.

Morobe, has a population of over 1 million people speaking a total of 171 district languages. Morobeans are notably friendly and conscientious people who make eager and entrusted hosts to newcomers to the province.
Lae and Morobe have a legacy of World War II history and gold mining. In the 1930s, it had the world record for the busiest airfield in the world due to the gold mining in Wau and Bulolo area. Lae is also the last stop of the famous aviator Amelia Earhart, who disappeared en route over the Pacific Ocean as the first woman to fly around the world. A memorial park was erected in her remembrance at the Independence Park. Lae is a rising industrial capital of PNG, and draws all of PNG Cultures to its festivals including the longest running 61 years Morobe Agricultural Show. It is now serviced by the new Lae Nadzab Tomodachi International Airport and the Lae International sea port.
